Catherine functions mainly as an Assassin, specializing in high burst damage. She also provides good utility, thanks to her unique Entice debuff which is basically a unique charm effect.
Anytime Assassin with guaranteed TA
Thanks to her Charge Attack which will guarantee a TA on the next turn, Catherine simply has benefits and will be able to burst for more than 3m potential damage. For newer players, this can be used instead on her Charge Attack for very high damage when combined with her second skill effect.
With her ability to cast either Charm or Entice on the enemy, Catherine is able to prevent them from attacking, with a 65% chance to avoid the enemy’s attacks when both of her debuffs are applied. Bringing Catherine can make difficult raids much easier to tackle thanks to Entice alone.
Lack of sustained damage
With most of her kit focusing on quick and powerful burst damage, Catherine often ends up being a sitting duck while waiting for her cooldowns, due to a lack of long duration self-buff to keep up a reasonable amount of DPS.
Very reliant on debuff success
Catherine needs to land her debuffs reliably, otherwise most of her abilities become ineffective. This can be a problem when fighting off element or against null element, as the character gets a debuff rate penalty. It can also be an issue against high debuff resistance water enemies.
Mediocre Atma synergy
While usable in Earth teams, Atma gun is at best a niche composition, and most players will rather use an Atma Katana or Atma Sword, of which neither benefits Catherine.
For a long time, Catherine had been a messy character, often having to choose between her utility and burst damage. It took a complete rebalance for her to finally become an enjoyable character to play, adding to Earth teams an Anytime Assassin with added unique utility that can be quite helpful in difficult raids.
Catherine’s first skill, Nocturnal, will cast two debuffs on the enemy. The first one is a local special debuff called Nightsmoke’s Prey, whose role is to trigger her Assassin on her third skill. The debuff lasts 3 turns, which means it has to be timed correctly for optimal burst. The second component is a charm debuff that is cast on the enemy: Catherine will first attempt to cast Entice on the enemy, a unique Charm with a 45% proc rate. If she misses Entice, she will then attempt to cast a weaker regular Charm (with a 35% proc rate). The important point is that Entice will stack with any other Charm, potentially preventing the enemy from attacking several turns in a row.
The Cat Thief’s second skill, Ivsa Lora, is similar to Vania: Catherine will attempt to steal a charge bar from the enemy (delay), and if she succeeds her own Charge Bar will receive a 30% boost. She will also gain a 30% C.A damage boost on next use, which is also a nice bonus to reach C.A cap.
Her third skill, Violet Assassination, will trigger Catherine’s Assassin if the enemy is affected by the Nightsmoke debuff, allowing her to deal extremely high damage. Using this skill has to be coupled with her Charge Attack effect, which guarantees Catherine a TA for the next turn.
Overall, Catherine will be an extremely powerful character for beginners, as she brings to the table two charms, skills that activate Assassin and a C.A boost. The protection granted by the charm procs are very valuable, and the burst she offers can really make it easier to put the enemy in break state, making the player less likely to be hit by an Overdrive Charge Attack.
In the late game, however, Catherine lack of sustained damage and DA/TA really hurt her. However, she still provides a niche role in Entice, potentially benefiting raid participants. Coupled with another Charm, this greatly reduces the number of incoming attacks.
Characters and Grid Options
Buffers, and especially Echo buffers
- SSR Cain is one of the best fits for Catherine, thanks to his Secret Plot effect that reduces the enemy’s debuff resistance, helping Catherine to land her own debuffs. Most of his offensive team buffs are also extremely welcomed since they offset Catherine low sustained DPS. Finally, the echo effect he brings allows Catherine to overcap even harder on her Anytime Assassin.
- Summer Rosetta will greatly appreciate the Charms in order to upkeep her Rose Barrier effect, while she boosts Catherine’s damage through her Earth ATK up and Earth echos.
- Mahira and Arulumaya are also buffers worth considering since they bring Echos as well.
- De La Fille and Yaia with their offensive buffs can also help compensate for her low attack outside of her Assassin.
- Superstar / Elysian is the ideal supporting class for Catherine, thanks to the debuff success bonus and the offensive buffs the class can bring with a harp.
Gun proficiency characters
Even though it’s a niche team, it remains possible to use a Gun Atma synergy based composition, with characters like Ilsa, Eustace, and Eugen. While those characters don’t necessarily have extraordinary synergy with Catherine, the possibility of using an Atma gun that benefits all of those characters might be alluring. A good choice of MC class in that case be Nighthound.
Due to her Gun proficiency and the high base attack guns generally have, a full gun grid will greatly benefit Catherine. Weapons such as AK-4A, Stratomizer, Vohu gun, are all a nice boon to Catherine’s raw damage, and can make her a great fit in Titan grids using those weapons.
Stamina Magna 2 grid
Since Catherine is unable to lower her own HP easily, a Stamina grid including weapons such as Alexiel Axes is ideal, as her charms help her allies maintain their HP.
|Support Skill ★★★||Debuff Success ★★★||Critical Hit ★★★|
|Earth Attack ★★☆||Earth Attack ★★☆||Triple Attack ★★☆|
|Double Attack ★☆☆||Attack ★☆☆||Attack ★☆☆|
Catherine’s support skill is extremely important, as it grants her up to 10% echo on her auto attacks, which synergizes extremely well with her Assassin. Debuff Success is also crucial to inflict debuffs on the opponent reliably. The other points are invested in improving her offensive potential.
Ring Bonus Suggestions
|1st roll||2nd roll||ATK and HP|
|Debuff Success||Triple Attack|
|C.A DMG cap|
Debuff success is important to improve further Catherine’s chances to land her debuffs. If played in a more offensive role however, C.A cap could be considered as a priority since it synergizes greatly with her second skill.
All around offensive buffs that help Catherine’s sustained damage.
